Liverpool’s Defensive Balancing Act After Summer Changes

Liverpool head into the new campaign as reigning Premier League champions under Arne Slot, but questions remain over their defensive depth despite an ambitious summer rebuild. The departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen in a £35 million deal has left just three senior centre-backs in Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez.

With a £30 million move for Parma’s Giovanni Leoni close to completion and a push to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace for a similar fee, there is clear intent to reinforce. Guehi’s contract runs out in a year, and his profile suits Liverpool’s need for a composed, athletic defender who can handle high-pressure matches.

Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn, speaking to Anfield Index, offered a measured view on the situation. “Their signings look exciting, but again they’ve got to fit in,” he said, highlighting the challenge of integrating multiple new arrivals quickly.

Squad Evolution Under Arne Slot

Slot has not been afraid to reshape his side, particularly in wide areas. “They’ve completely changed their full-backs and they’ve changed their left-hand side as well,” Winterburn observed. Such shifts inevitably bring both promise and uncertainty. On the one hand, there is the potential for Liverpool to become even more fluid and unpredictable in attack. On the other, cohesion at the back can suffer during a period of adaptation.

The new full-backs and left-sided changes could see Liverpool build play differently, stretching opponents more effectively and creating overloads in advanced positions. However, this evolution will place extra responsibility on central defenders and the holding midfielders to maintain structure.

Depth Concerns and Injury Risks

Winterburn also sounded a note of caution about Liverpool’s defensive options. “It could be key to who they can keep fit in the defensive line, because they haven’t got much depth there,” he warned. A long season across multiple competitions can test even the most robust squads, and Liverpool’s reliance on a small core of senior centre-backs could become a vulnerability.

The manager’s rotation choices, and the fitness management of his key defenders, will therefore be critical. Should Van Dijk, Konate or Gomez face extended absences, new signings like Leoni or potentially Guehi could be thrust straight into high-stakes situations.

Attacking Power Remains Intact

While defensive depth is a concern, Liverpool’s attacking threat is undiminished. “I think Liverpool will create numerous chances but I’m not sure if they will be as defensively strong this season,” Winterburn remarked. Slot’s side possess pace, creativity and finishing ability across the front line, which could compensate for any instability at the back in the short term.

If the new recruits settle quickly and the defensive core stays healthy, Liverpool can realistically aim for another title challenge. The balancing act between maintaining attacking potency and reinforcing defensive solidity will define the months ahead.
