Ex-Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez, a free agent at the end of the season, may be eyeing another stint in the Premier League, sparking discussions among Arsenal fans.

  • Alexis Sanchez, the ex-Arsenal and Manchester United forward, currently a free agent, is speculated to be aiming for a Premier League return.
  • There are rumours in Chile that Arsenal may be considering an offer for Sanchez but that seems highly unlikely.
  • Despite a lacklustre performance post-Arsenal, some Arsenal supporters are advocating for Sanchez’s return.

Alexis Sanchez, 34, the former Arsenal and Manchester United star, is about to become a free agent at the end of the season following his recent spell at Marseille and the Chilean forward, with a storied career at Udinese and Barcelona, is apparently contemplating another go at the Premier League.

Alexis, who made a significant impact at Arsenal from 2014 to 2018, bagging the FA Cup twice, had a less than stellar tenure at Old Trafford. Following his underwhelming spell at United, he moved to Inter Milan, initially on loan before becoming a permanent transfer.

It’s been reported that after the completion of his first season in Ligue 1, with Marseille likely to secure a third-place finish, Alexis might be weighing up his options. It’s suggested in Chile that the Gunners could be mulling over extending an offer to the forward, with some fans calling for his return despite his tumultuous departure five years ago. That, however, seems like nonsense to me.

The departure of this 153-cap international to United, reportedly for a staggering £391,000 per week, plus bonuses, left many supporters disgruntled. Since his exit, Alexis hasn’t recaptured the form he demonstrated during his time at the Emirates, leading to concerns about a potential return. His goalscoring in Ligue 1 this season has been decent (14), but it fell well short of Alexandre Lacazette (26) and Folarin Balogun (20), both of whom deemed not enough for the Gunners.

Alexis has previously stated that he was on the verge of joining Manchester City before his move to United fell into place. Reportedly, another player’s refusal to switch to Arsenal from Etihad put a halt to Alexis’s City move. He’s quoted saying, “Everything was ready… Wenger tells me you are not leaving because the other player did not want to come.

“Suddenly the cell phone rings. (Jose) Mourinho tells me: ‘Alexis, here is the seven [shirt] available for you.'”

Sanchez added: “That’s when I said to myself, Chilean footballer playing for Manchester United, something that has never happened.”

The forthcoming weeks will undoubtedly be a crucial period for Alexis. Can this veteran forward make a successful comeback to the English top flight, or will his career trajectory veer into an unexpected direction? Only time will tell.
