Arsenal have confirmed Kai Havertz is set to miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury and will undergo surgery.
“We can confirm that Kai Havertz has sustained a hamstring injury during a training session in Dubai last week,” Arsenal said in a statement.
“Subsequent assessments and specialist reviews have confirmed that the injury will require surgery, which will take place in the coming days. Soon after surgery, Kai will begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, which is expected to extend into pre-season preparations for next season.
“Everyone at the club is fully focused on supporting Kai to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”
Havertz’s injury has left boss Mikel Arteta with just three fit first-team forwards available for selection – Leandro Trossard, Raheem Sterling and Ethan Nwaneri.
Bukayo Saka will be out until at least March with a hamstring injury.
Gabriel Martinelli also suffered a hamstring injury in the Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle and is set to be out for more than a month.
And Gabriel Jesus is out for the remainder of the season and likely more after an ACL injury against Manchester United in the FA Cup.
Arsenal tried to add to their forward line in the January transfer window but were unsuccessful in their attempts, seeing a bid rejected for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.
It has left Arteta without a recognised striker available, with all three available attackers preferred as wide options.
The injury crisis means Arteta will be forced into playing players outside of their favoured positions.
The Gunners could look to the free agent market for relief, with some notable forwards still without a club following the end of the January transfer window.
It will likely be that Arteta looks for solutions within the current group of players, however.
Arsenal return to action after ten days without a game when they travel to Leicester City on Saturday.
