Liverpool boss Arne Slot has heaped praise on Wolverhampton Wanderers’ forward Matheus Cunha, suggesting the Brazilian possesses the talent to thrive at a top Premier League club. As the Reds prepare to face Wolves at Anfield this Sunday, Slot’s comments have ignited discussion about Cunha’s quality and his potential suitability for a side like Liverpool.
Liverpool heads into the weekend fixture with a seven-point cushion over Arsenal, eager to recover from their frustrating 2-2 draw in the Merseyside derby. Slot shared mixed news regarding his squad’s fitness, confirming Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return after a thigh injury but noting Joe Gomez’s continued absence.
“We have Trent Alexander-Arnold back. I think the intention was for him to play around half an hour, so he will be training with us again,” Slot said during his pre-match press conference. “Joe Gomez is out, and Tyler Morton is out.”
Cody Gakpo is also a doubt after picking up a knock, while Curtis Jones will miss out due to suspension. Despite the challenges, Slot remains optimistic about his side’s chances against a Wolves team brimming with confidence following their recent 2-0 win over Aston Villa.
Slot’s remarks about Matheus Cunha have raised eyebrows, particularly his assertion that the Wolves forward could walk into a top-five Premier League side.
“He is a type of player I am referring to when I compare this league to the other one I worked at,” Slot said, referencing his time in the Eredivisie. “Wolves are 17th and if you go to Holland, there’s no player in the 17th-placed team who could play at Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord. But Cunha could play in a top five team in England. Shows why it’s hard in this league.”
Despite Cunha’s impressive performances, Wolves have taken steps to fend off potential suitors. The forward signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract earlier this month, which includes a substantial £62.5 million release clause. The move signals Wolves’ intent to retain their star man amid reported interest from Arsenal and Aston Villa.
As Liverpool and Wolves prepare for their clash, Slot’s comments have added an intriguing subplot to an already compelling fixture. Cunha’s performance at Anfield could serve as a timely reminder of the talent Slot believes could flourish in any top Premier League side.
