Manchester City players can expect to be handed a “brilliant idea” by manager Pep Guardiola that will re-find their form this season, according to Liverpool’s Arne Slot.
The Premier League champions have now gone over a month without a win any competition in a run of matches that was extended to six on Tuesday night, suffering poor results in the Carabao Cup, English top-flight, and the UEFA Champions League.
Tottenham have been responsible for two of City’s five defeats in a row, sending Guardiola’s side out of the League Cup and winning 0-4 at the Etihad Stadium in Premier League action, whilst back-to-back 2-1 losses on the south coast came against Bournemouth and Brighton.
A 4-1 loss to Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League was almost bounced back upon against Feyenoord on Tuesday night, however three goals in the final 15 minutes from the Dutch outfit snatched a point from the Etihad.
Now, speaking during his pre-match media conference on Thursday afternoon, Liverpool boss Arne Slot has backed Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola to “come up with a solution” that will save his squad and revive their rotten run of form across competitions.
“One of the best reasons why I think Pep Guardiola is the best manager in the world is because he always comes up with solutions for his problems,” Slot told reporters ahead of Sunday afternoon’s meeting with Guardiola’s squad at Anfield.
The Dutchman continued on the Manchester City manager, “He will come up with a solution and *clicks fingers* they will go again – but hopefully after Sunday.”
Asked for his thoughts on Manchester City’s 15-minute collapse against his former club in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, Arne Slot said, “Them conceding three (goals) against Feyenoord had a lot to do with changes they made and being extremely unlucky.”
Slot continued, “I wouldn’t be surprised if Pep (Guardiola) comes up with brilliant idea. He started inverted full-backs and centre-backs as number six’s.
“When he did it we thought he was crazy and then we tried it as it was a brilliant idea. If anyone can come up with something, it’s him.”
Manchester City travel to Anfield on Sunday afternoon as they look to prevent Arne Slot’s high-flying Liverpool side from moving 11 points clear of the reigning champions, in a gap that Ilkay Gundogan believes would be too much to recover from.
