The explosive reemergence in form of Joaquin Correa against Hellas Verona has not come as any surprise to Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi.
This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews. They report that the 30-year-old is ready to try and build on his display against Verona and change his fate at Inter.
Inter forward Joaquin Correa was just about the last player most would have expected to be the hero for the Nerazzurri in yesterday’s Serie A match against Hellas Verona.
The Argentine has had a tough go during his time at Inter. After two seasons in which he never really reproduced his best form from Lazio, Correa went on loan to Marseille last season.
After a frustrating loan spell in Ligue 1, Correa returned to Inter.
A departure during the summer transfer window seemed inevitable. However, in the end no suitable offers arrived for Correa and the former Sevilla and Sampdoria forward remained at Inter.
That was reportedly a welcome development from the perspective of Inter coach Simone Inzaghi.
The Nerazzurri coach was happy to have one more senior forward in the squad.
Squad depth and the ability to rotate players is a vital aspect for Inzaghi.
And Correa is a player who the 48-year-old is very familiar with. In fact, he had essentially brought Correa to Inter with him in 2021 after working together successfully for several seasons at Lazio.
So far this season, Inzaghi had used Correa sporadically. The Argentine has come on as a substitute in a handful of matches, but just to see them out.
By all appearances, it seemed as though the Inter coach was mainly using Correa to allow other forwards in the squad a chance to rest and catch their breath.
It came as a surprise to many to see Correa making his first start of the season for Inter in yesterday’s Serie A clash with Hellas Verona.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi backed the 30-year-old to make a positive impact.
The Nerazzurri coach was without his captain Lautaro Martinez. And he wanted to keep the likes of Mehdi Taremi and Marko Arnautovic fresh, particularly after the international break.
Correa was not just there to make up the numbers, though.
It was a very bright performance from the former Lazio forward.
From just about the first minute Correa looked as sharp and hungry as he ever has in an Inter shirt.
If anything the 30-year-old looked more like the player he had been under Inzaghi at Lazio rather than the player who so often underwhelmed in an Inter shirt.
One person who was not surprised to see this was Nerazzurri coach Inzaghi.
The coach knows full well what Correa is capable of. Even if the Argentine has not showed it often enough at Inter.
But Inzaghi has backed Correa all along. He was happy to keep the 30-year-old in the squad for this season – and not just as an emergency depth option.
Inzaghi has always been positive with Correa. He’s been telling the former Lazio forward that if he works hard, the opportunities will come.
And the chance did arrive yesterday for Correa. The 30-year-old grabbed it with both hands.
Now, Correa is determined to see out the rest of the season at Inter.
And FCIN note that even a shock contract extension may not be out of the question for the Argentine.
