With Rodri out for the season, Manchester City may look to bring in another midfielder in January. That would depend on how Pep Guardiola’s men handle the loss of their midfield general. One player City could look to target is Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. A new report indicates that City ‘held discussions’ over a move for the England international. But could the champions hope to land Wharton in January? That remains to be seen.

Ciaran McCarthy has relayed a report from reporter Ekrem Konur for TeamTalk that Manchester City and Liverpool have ‘held discussions’ with Crystal Palace over a potential move for Adam Wharton. Furthermore, McCarthy reports that the Crystal Palace midfielder has a reported price tag of £55 million. McCarthy adds that both City and Liverpool are only willing to pay £38 million for Wharton. Lastly, it is also included in McCarthy’s report that Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham and Bayern Munich all have an interest in signing the Crystal Palace midfielder.

Would Manchester City move for Adam Wharton in January?

The quality of Adam Wharton is well known. He is one of England’s brightest young midfield prospects. That has seen him linked with a host of top clubs since he arrived and thrived at Crystal Palace. Wharton has shown his incredible talent at Blackburn Rovers and now Crystal Palace. It is clear to see why clubs are interested in signing the midfielder. But could Manchester City actually sign the Crystal Palace midfielder in January? It doesn’t appear to be an impossible move to make, although it may be a difficult deal to complete.

Ekrem Konur reports that both Manchester City and Liverpool are prepared to make a move for Wharton in January. If that report is correct then City and their rival are planning a move for the midfielder. But as Konur reports Crystal Palace will demand a sizable fee for their prized asset. Despite the high cost involved in signing Wharton, it may be a move that the world champions have to make.

With Rodri out for the season there is a vacancy in City’s midfield. While Pep Guardiola has a plethora of quality options at his disposal without Rodri a  player like Wharton would add something different to Manchester City’s midfield. He can play the role Rodri plays and brings his own strengths to it. Wharton is also young enough to develop and be a squad player when Rodri returns from injury. On face value a Manchester City move for Adam Wharton does make sense.

But there is a lot of water to go under the bridge before that possibility becomes a reality. But as a player Adam Wharton could the the ideal midfielder to add to Pep Guardiola’s midfield. It now remains to be seen if the champions will move for the Crystal Palace midfielder in January.
