The strange tale of Issane Charai at Rangers will go down as one of the more confusing footnotes in the club’s long history. Appointed back in January by Philippe Clement as part of a minor backroom reshuffle, Charai arrived with very little fanfare and even less clarity over what his role was supposed to be. Officially tagged as a ‘strategic football advisor’ or some such vague title, his presence raised eyebrows among supporters who had expected more high profile names to be brought in with the supposed financial muscle of the American takeover.
Charai’s background was not especially notable. A former assistant to Marc Brys in the Belgium setup, he had limited direct experience in a senior leadership capacity at a club the size of Rangers. His appointment seemed more like a favour than a genuine strategic move and it was never fully explained by the board. His ties to Clement were clear, but even so the Belgian manager never publicly elaborated on what Charai’s job entailed. When the new regime stepped in and Clement was dismissed, many assumed Charai would follow him out the door.
Instead he remained in post for several more weeks with no defined purpose. There was no press conference, no communication to supporters, and no visible contribution to anything involving transfers or strategy. Even internally it is unclear whether Charai was ever fully embedded. That he was kept on after Clement’s sacking raised serious questions about the competence and organisation of the new leadership team. This is the same board that has already made some odd calls and Charai’s quiet limbo only added to the unease.
Today the news finally came that Issane Charai had officially left Rangers. His departure was as low key as his arrival and tenure. An announcement has been made and statement released. Just a quiet removal from the setup and a line drawn under what must go down as one of the strangest staffing episodes in recent Ibrox history.
Rangers cannot afford many more missteps like this. With the fanbase already wary of the new regime trust must be rebuilt through clear action and accountability. Episodes like the Charai farce only deepen the suspicion that not everything is as stable or professional as it needs to be.
