Ange Postecoglou offers concerning Son Heung-min injury update vs. Bodo Glimt

Tottenham suffered an unsurprising humiliation at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday, helping the Reds christen their convincing Premier League title triumph in, well, very convincing fashion against a completely overmatched opponent.

However, there isn't any time to dwell on what is, ultimately, a meaningless result under a manager who will invariably be fired. That said, Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham have plenty to play for, because if they can win the Europa League, they will qualify for the Champions League irrespective of the fact that they are buried in the bottom five of the Premier League.

Thursday's first leg of the semifinals beckons against underdogs Bodo Glimt, who managed to knock Italian side Lazio out in dramatic fashion. Tottenham fans are wondering if their biggest name, Son Heung-min, will be available after missing the last few games with a foot injury.

Son Heung-min is a game-time decision

There has been a lot of speculation as to whether or not the injury is real or a means of protecting Son from being benched for loan signing Mathys Tel, who has provided more of a spark than the plodding veteran. But Son may very well have been plodding because Spurs were making him play through the pain, which is still not a good look for Postecoglou.

Son's status for Thursday's first leg remains murky. Postecoglou told reporters after the 5-1 loss to Liverpool, via The Spurs Express, that while Son Heung-min will "try hard" to face Bodo Glimt, the left winger will be "touch and go". Big Ange was more optimsitic that Son can play in the second leg the following week on May 8.

It looks like Son is highly questionable to play on Thursday and can be considered a game-time decision. Perhaps this will shed on how serious the injury is and how much Postecoglou and Tottenham believe the 32-year-old helps Tottenham at this stage.

Son is still an asset to Tottenham in big games

Son's had a rough 2025 so far after a decent enough start to the 2024/25 campaign in the first half of it. If Tottenham don't think he's enough of an asset above Tel, then there is simply no point in having him play at less than 100 percent. It would be self-defeating. But if Spurs truly believe Son is their best player and a difference-maker in big games like he has been so many times in his career in tournaments, then they might let him play - and I would assume that an elite athlete like Son is itching to get there, just as he was before Spurs finally shust him down for a couple of weeks.

It's not an encouraging sign, though, that Tottenham don't have a more optimistic injury update on Son. He seems to be in a holding pattern, because it's not like Postecoglou is saying that he's improving or showing any more optimism compared to what he's relayed before the previous three Premier League encounters that the South Korean superstar has missed. I'd count him as more of a "no" than a "yes" against Bodo Glimt, but I would be very shocked if he isn't present in the second leg. Even at his worst, Son is still important to Tottenham, particularly in these big knockout ties.
