Tottenham’s January transfer window plans may see a shake-up as the future of Timo Werner hangs in the balance.

The German international arrived in North London with the hope of reigniting his Premier League career but has struggled to live up to expectations.

As Spurs assess their options, the next chapter for Werner looks increasingly uncertain.

Once heralded as one of Europe’s most promising strikers, Werner’s journey at Tottenham has been far from smooth.

Supporters were optimistic when he joined on loan from RB Leipzig in January 2024, but questions are now being raised about whether the club will look to cut ties earlier than anticipated.

Werner signed a loan deal with Tottenham running until summer 2025, with an optional purchase clause set at €12 million.

Reports from BILD suggest that Spurs are unlikely to activate this clause after a lacklustre year. Despite flashes of his talent, the striker has managed just three goals and six assists during his 12 months in North London.

Compounding matters, Werner has faced criticism for his performances in key fixtures. Earlier this month, manager Ange Postecoglou expressed his dissatisfaction after substituting the 28-year-old at halftime during a Europa League clash against Rangers.

Postecoglou didn’t mince words post-match:

"He wasn’t playing at anywhere near the level he should be. Timo’s first-half performance was not acceptable to me," the boss said. "I told Timo that he’s a German international, that I need everyone to be trying to give their best and this wasn’t an acceptable example. I expect a lot more from the senior guys."

Such remarks underline the growing frustration within the club regarding Werner’s inability to deliver consistently.

What lies ahead for Timo Werner?

While a return to Leipzig in January is unlikely—due to his significant €10 million annual salary—the summer could bring new possibilities.

Another loan spell or permanent move seems probable, though finding a suitor willing to take on his wages and current form might be challenging.

Werner’s struggles in England echo his difficult two-year stint at Chelsea before returning to Germany in 2022.

Yet, his prolific Bundesliga record remains a reminder of his potential. For Tottenham, the priority will be resolving Werner’s situation in a way that benefits both the player and the club.
