Real Madrid got another three points in La Liga last night as they beat third-placed Villarreal with a 2-0 scoreline. This was an important win for the Merengues, as they ensured their deficit with Barcelona would not increase further before going into the next international break.

However, most of the happiness that Los Blancos would have felt for this win evaporated as Dani Carvajal suffered a serious injury in the final play of the game. The Real Madrid captain was screeching and seething in pain on the pitch and had to be stretchered off right before the full-time whistle.

Carlo Ancelotti undertook his customary press conference after the game. As MARCA has reported, the Italian talked at some length about one of his most important players, who is expected to remain out of action for a long time with this injury:

“It seems like a serious knee injury. Tests will be done in the coming hours. The locker room is worried and saddened. Something has happened that we all wish wouldn’t happen. It often happens due to the schedule. Unfortunately, it has happened to a very important player for us.”

The Real Madrid gaffer went on to highlight Carvajal’s importance for his team:

“He’s a key player because of his experience and professionalism… We’ll have to wait. I spoke with him a bit, and he’s feeling sad and disappointed. But there’s not much we can do. Now we have to see what the medical assessment is, and then focus on getting him back to recovery.”

Dani Carvajal himself later confirmed that he has suffered a cruciate ligament injury, and although the club is yet to officially announce the timeframe of his return, one can reasonably expect his season to be already over.

As Ancelotti said, he is one of the most important players in this Real Madrid team, and his absence will definitely be felt by the squad. But hopefully, he will be able to recover from this issue as soon as possible and return to contribute to the team’s success in an even better shape.
