With Manchester City having secured a third-place finish on the Premier League table with their 2-nil win over Fulham on the final day of the season, attention has quickly turned to matters off the pitch. There will be players that leave the club. But the departures from the club will now reportedly not be limited to just players.
Members of Pep Guardiola’s staff will also likely leave the club. A new report indicates that Pep Guardiola’s trusted assistant, Juanma Lillo, will leave the club. He is unlikely to be the only departure from Pep Guardiola’s staff this summer. It now seems that a mass upheaval is underway at Manchester City.
Aritz Gabilondo has reported for Spanish publication AS that City assistant manager Juanma Lillo is set to leave Manchester City. Furthermore, Gabilondo reports that Lillo is unlikely to travel to the United States with the City squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. Gabilondo adds that other members of Pep Guardiola’s backroom staff are expected to leave the club this summer.
Jack Gaughan has reported for the Daily Mail that Manchester City are set to begin contract extension talks with a host of Pep Guardiola’s staff. Furthermore, Gaughan reports that Manchester City’s new director of football, Hugo Viana, will be formulating a view on the City coaching set-up for next season.
The 24/25 season may well be looked back upon as the end of a cycle or era for Manchester City. After being the dominant force in English football they meekly surrendered their crown this season. At times, it appeared that everything had run its course at the club. On the pitch, results suffered from the end of November until the end of January. Certain City players looked like they had reached the end of their time at the club. They will have to be replaced. It seems that the City hierarchy has already begun this process.
But now it seems that Pep Guardiola’s staff may also be overturned this summer. Perhaps it is the right time for such a move. New ideas from new staff may also help bring out the best in Pep Guardiola and his team. Cycles and eras end. That rings true for matters on the pitch as well as off the pitch. Perhaps the time is right for Juanma Lillo and other members of Pep Guardiola’s staff to depart. That way Guardiola can work with new staff with different points of view.
It now seems that Manchester City are set for upheaval both on and off the pitch. That was to be expected after such a disappointing 24/25 season. Which members of Pep Guardiola’s staff leave the club is yet another story to follow in what looms as a busy summer at Manchester City.
