Ruben Amorim insists goalkeeper Andre Onana was not being disrespectful towards Lyon with his recent comments following public criticism from former Man Utd star Nemanja Matic in retaliation.
Matic labelled Onana “statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s modern history” following comments from the United shot-stopper in which he said his side were “way better” than Matic’s Lyon, ahead of their Europa League quarter-final.
Onana also said Lyon were a “very good team” and that he anticipated a tough test.
And Amorim insists the war of words stemmed from a misunderstanding by Matic and admits it was hard for Onana to hear that criticism.
“It’s really hard to deal with that, that is for sure, and again if you look at all the quotes you cannot see disrespect there,” the United boss said. “Just respect but trying to give confidence and show confidence in his team.
“Especially this year, everyone can say bad things about Manchester United, sometimes we as players, a group and staff has to show some confidence in our team. I think that’s all.
“I know Nemanja Matic really well and what a good guy he is. He hears some things by half, not the whole story. That for me is clear in this situation.”
Onana also responded to Matic, appearing to take a dig at the Lyon midfielder in return: “I would never be disrespectful to another club. We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent,” Onana said on X.
“We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud. At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”
And Amorim says the exchange of comments will not matter when the two sides face off on Thursday.
“I think it will not matter,” he said.
“If you see the full quote of Andre Onana it’s quite different. The first sentence is that Lyon is a very good team.
“So I think sometimes the players don’t listen or the coaches don’t listen to the full quote and sometimes it’s just a misunderstanding.
“Tomorrow is going to be a normal game.”
