Ruben Amorim joked that Manchester United supporters will think he is “the new Alex Ferguson” if his Sporting side beat Man City tomorrow.
Amorim will take over at Manchester United on November 11 and will remain in charge of Sporting CP until then.
His side take on United’s rivals Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday but Amorim says he is not thinking about the significance of the game when it comes to his future job.
“The conclusions they (the fans) will draw from this game are not important to me because they can be misleading,” he said.
“That is, if the result is very negative expectations will lower and I don’t think that’s a bad starting point when starting as Manchester United.
“If we win tomorrow, they will think that the new Alex Ferguson has arrived which is very difficult to maintain afterwards.
“So I would say that regardless of the expectations and the conclusions they will draw tomorrow, that doesn’t interest me.
“What interests me is to win the game, have a good farewell at Alvalade, win in Braga, and then start a new life in Manchester.
“Therefore, it can go both ways. It can raise expectations, it can lower expectations. I don’t know what is better to start the new the new adventure in Manchester.”
