Amad Diallo inspired Manchester United to a dramatic derby win at Manchester City on Sunday.
A forgettable fixture exploded in the final moments as Manchester United scored twice after the 88th minute to turn defeat into victory at the Etihad. Both teams headed into the clash in underwhelming form, with Manchester City enduring a torrid run of one win in 10 games. United, meanwhile, sat 13th in the table at kick-off after their worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign.
The early exchanges showcased two sides lacking confidence, though it was City who broke the deadlock before the break. Kevin De Bruyne’s deflected cross landed for Josko Gvardiol to power home his fourth league goal of the season.
Pep Guardiola’s team were unable to build on that advantage, however, and failed to record a shot on target after the break. The visitors had the better chances with Bruno Fernandes guilty of spurning the best opportunity, as he lifted wide when one-against-one with Ederson.
Then came the moment that changed the game. Matheus Nunes’ under-hit a back-pass to Ederson, with Diallo seizing upon the loose ball. Nunes, in his desperation to make amends, fouled the winger inside the box after Diallo had rounded the goalkeeper.
Bruno Fernandes made no mistake to level from the spot, before Diallo completed the turnaround two minutes later. Lisandro Martinez’s long pass released the Ivorian in behind and a brilliant first touch lifted the ball past Ederson. From an acute angle, he rolled home with Gvardiol unable to clear on the goal-line. Pandemonium ensued in the away end, as Ruben Amorim celebrated the biggest win of his early reign at Manchester United.
For City, the problems continue piling up as their run extended to a single win in 11 games. The champions remain fifth, nine points behind leaders Liverpool having played a game more.
