Ruben Amorim had his first game in charge on Sunday, with his Manchester United side being held to a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
While Man United enjoyed numerous spurts of possession while playing plenty of cool passes, they struggled to pose much of a threat in front of goal, matching the home side with 11 shots each.
Still, while Amorim’s players might still need some time to adjust to his playing style, one player who seemingly integrated without a hitch is Amad Diallo.
Playing as the right wing-back in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation, Amad made an immediate impact on the game, engaging in a slick one-two with Bruno Fernandes before threading an opportune through ball to Marcus Rashford up top. Thanks to Amad’s expert pass, Rashford was able to effortlessly tap the ball into the net to hand United the lead within 90 seconds of play.
A little later in the first half, Amad looked likely to assist another goal. He sprinted up the right flank, losing his mark before cutting a pass back to Christian Eriksen who was waiting on the edge of the box. Unfortunately, Eriksen’s shot was off target.
40 of Amad’s 44 passes found their target, making for a 91% passing accuracy. He delivered two key passes, showing his creativity as a playmaker on the wing.
While neither of his two crosses were accurate, Amad completed both of his long balls.
Completing two of five dribbles, Amad managed to win four of his seven ground duels. He also won his only aerial challenge.
Amad also attempted two shots, one of which was on target while the other was blocked.
Tracking back in defence, Amad showed decent focus, making five clearances.
While numerous United attackers struggled to penetrate the Ipswich defence, Amad was not one of them. This is even more impressive given that he played in a deeper position than he is used to.
With this performance, it’s clear that Amad is a natural fit for Amorim’s system. The Portuguese manager will do well to rely on the talented winger – or wing-back – as he looks to establish some momentum.
