Bayern Munich have been working on contract renewals of several star players in the first team since the start of the season. The hard work of Max Eberl and Christoph Freund is coming to fruition as first big contract extension is close to completion at Bayern.

As per the highly reliable and trustworthy David Ornstein of The Athletic, Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies is close to extending his contract at the club - despite talk from the local media that talks have reached a major stumbling block earlier this week.

The report from The Athletic confirms that Davies will sign a four year contract sooner rather than later as few details need to be ironed out. Real Madrid and Premier League are keenly monitoring the situation, but a compromise between Davies and Bayern is likely to be struck.

Alphonso Davies has been crucial to Kompany's system at Bayern

It really cannot be overstated just how important this piece of business is for Bayern. So far this season, Davies has been a top-five performer for Bayern - perhaps top three. He has adapted incredibly to playing in a more tucked-in full-back role when Bayern have the ball under Vincent Kompany, whilst consistently using his pace to put out fires when the team loses possession.

Last season, the Canadian defender averaged 71.4 touches, compared to 85.1 touches per game this campaign. Nearly 14 more touches every single game. His dribbles have gone down from 2.4 dribbles per game to 1.7, which shows how his role has changed. He is now there to be a part of the build-up, rather than taking players out on the touchline.

Bayern have been sublime defensively for around three months now, and Davies has been a big part of that. In the last two games, he is the only player in the back four to have started both games, where the team has kept two clean sheets. Die Roten's only league defeat of the season - away at Mainz - came with Davies injured.

To lose a player of this quality on a free transfer would have been a disaster for Die Roten. It is one thing selling a player like this, but to lose them for free would have added insult to the injury. Bayern would have had to fork big money out on a replacement, which does suggest that they would have got closer to the demands of Davies instead of spending big on a full-back in the summer.
