Alphonso Davies continues to work on his comeback. The 24-year-old FC Bayern defender completed his first individual running training session at Säbener Straße on Thursday morning since his injury. “I feel great,” declared the Canadian in an interview with fcbayern.com. “It took a while, but now I'm just happy to be back out in the fresh air and able to run faster than five kilometres per hour. In the first few months after the injury, I could only walk. Being able to jog a little bit again definitely feels different.”

Step-by-step comeback

Davies suffered a cruciate ligament tear in his right knee while playing for the Canadian national team in late March. Commenting on his first running session on the pitch, Davies said: “I tried to run a little slower at first, but the coach told me to run a little faster. I was thrilled about that. But I know I have to take it step by step.”

Looking ahead at the plan for the coming weeks, he said: “I’m someone who likes to run fast, but I know I have to stay patient. We’ll see what the reaction is after the running and strength sessions. The next step will be building up the muscles in the leg and hoping that everything goes smoothly.”

The fact he’s had company in rehab with Hiroki Ito (metatarsal) and Jamal Musiala (dislocated ankle and fractured fibula) gives him added motivation. “We see each other every day and try to keep up each other’s motivation,” explained the Canadian international. “It helps to have good people around you. Hiroki and I have bonded through our time together, even when we were by ourselves here at times. Jamal is a young lad and he understands the role he has in the team. We need him fit and in good spirits.”

With great motivation, but also the necessary patience, Davies wants to progress step by step after his injury and make his way back onto the pitch.
