The result arrived as a shock, and so did the winning goal, as goaltender Agustín Marchesín picked the ball out of his net early on.

Pablo Ceppelini, 33, proved to be the man of the hour for hosts Alianza Lima after smashing the ball home from point-blank range following a scramble off a corner kick.

His goal was the first time the Peruvian team had scored against Boca since 1966 and it arrived with less than four minutes on the clock.

The Argentina giants, meanwhile, failed to genuinely threaten a comeback during the remaining 86 minutes plus stoppage time.

Boca Juniors dominated possession of the ball (63%) but struggled to put true chances on target, with only three by the final whistle.

Leading goalscorers Miguel Merentiel and Exequiel Zeballos notably struggled to kickstart a comeback.

Regardless, the one-goal difference still leaves the door open for both clubs.

Alianza Lima will know the return leg back at La Bombonera on February 25 will require the performance of their lives to remain in the competition.
