Liverpool may have made headlines by landing Florian Wirtz for a club-record fee, but the real story of their summer could yet revolve around who leads the line. Arne Slot’s side, fresh from winning the Premier League in his debut season, are reportedly not done shaping their forward line. With attacking options being scrutinised, Alexander Isak of Newcastle United has emerged as a genuine object of desire.
The 25-year-old Swede, admired for his composure, movement and clinical finishing, is no longer a well-kept secret. Newcastle United know they have a prized asset, and their reluctance to sell is more than a negotiation stance — it’s an institutional stance. Reports have claimed it could take up to £200 million to pry him away from St James’ Park, a figure that not only reflects his quality but also his value to Eddie Howe’s project.
The growing speculation recently found its way onto The Rest Is Football podcast, where Gary Lineker floated the idea of Isak joining Liverpool to partner Wirtz. He asked former England captain Alan Shearer how he thought Slot might use the new German arrival.
“Where do you think Wirtz will play?” Lineker asked. “I mean, obviously he’s a player that can play as an eight, but also as a 10.”
Shearer’s response was more tactical than emotive. “I think it will be floating between the two,” he replied. “I think he’ll have one, obviously Salah on one side and whoever on the other side, and it will be him, that will be the 10, the forward and they’ll just sort of rotate and do what they have to do. So I think that’s where he’ll play.”
Lineker, clearly enjoying the moment, added, “Yeah and Isak as the nine, right?”
That was the tipping point. “No chance!” Shearer snapped, pairing his verbal rebuttal with a double middle-fingered salute in typical bantering style.

Liverpool’s interest in Isak appears genuine, but Shearer’s reaction captures the sentiment on Tyneside. Selling their star striker, particularly to a Premier League rival, could prove politically unpalatable. For now, the message from Newcastle is unequivocal — hands off.
Yet the longer the transfer window goes on, the harder it becomes to ignore the noise. Liverpool, who have already reshaped their midfield and added flair with Wirtz, are actively exploring their striker shortlist. Isak is admired, but other names remain under consideration.
Sources close to Anfield suggest that Liverpool are keeping tabs on other high-profile strikers. Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres remain prominent on the club’s radar. Each presents a different profile, but both are capable of delivering in a high-press, possession-heavy system — exactly what Slot favours.
Still, there’s something uniquely compelling about Isak. The combination of physicality and finesse, along with his age profile, makes him ideal. If Newcastle’s financial outlook changes or Isak expresses an ambition to move, Liverpool will be ready.
Until then, Alan Shearer may need to brace himself for more hypotheticals, more teasing, and more uncomfortable questions about his club’s ability to hold on to their marquee forward.
