Since Alexander Isak arrived in the north of England, Newcastle United have gradually transformed themselves into a team with real ambitions. Under Eddie Howe, the Magpies have moved from being a mid-table side to a European contender. Last season, they managed to stay in contention for European places despite injuries to their squad. Their qualification for the Champions League for the upcoming 2025/26 season was again a milestone, and with a young and growing squad, the club had started to establish themselves as a serious project.

In this scenario, the Swedish Alexander Isak became a key player. His performance grew match by match, and he became fundamental to the attack. What seemed like a gamble on the future quickly became a reality, and now, just when it looked like Newcastle could build around him, a new threat emerges.

Liverpool and Al-Hilal are pushing for the Swede

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Al-Hilal have joined the race to sign Alexander Isak. The Saudi club want to strengthen their attack and consider the Swedish striker as their big target. Obviously, they are not alone. Liverpool, with Arne Slot at the helm, have also shown interest in the uncertainty surrounding Darwin Nunez and after Diogo Jota’s untimely passing. Both clubs know that convincing the player and Newcastle will not be easy, but they also have the resources to tempt.

Isak is coming off the back of an impressive season with 27 goals and six assists in 42 games. At 25, he possesses agility, immense technical qualities and a finishing ability that is in short supply at the elite level. The Swede’s growth since leaving Real Sociedad has been steady, and his impact in the Premier League is no longer in doubt.

Newcastle United should not sell their star player

Selling Isak now would be a serious mistake. Regardless of the offer Al-Hilal may make, Newcastle must keep their best players if they are to establish themselves as regulars in European competition. The departure of their star striker would leave a gap that would be impossible to fill immediately.

Moreover, with three years left on his contract and no financial urgency thanks to Champions League revenues and a more stable financial position, there is no real pressure to sell. Although both Newcastle and Al-Hilal share ownership, that should not influence this transfer saga. The English club have their own sporting project, and selling Isak would weaken it.

There is also a key detail that Isak has shown no signs of wanting to leave European football. He is committed to the team’s growth and knows he still has room to shine in the Premier League. Rejecting the Saudi offer would send a clear message that Newcastle want to compete, not survive. If the club really aspire to stay in the elite, they must build on their spine, not dismantle it. Isak is not transferable. Not yet.
