Ajax can officially qualify for the group stage of the new Champions League season on Sunday. This can happen when they visit FC Utrecht, a match that has been brought forward two weeks on the agenda.
“That’s good for our club’s bank account,” coach Francesco Farioli said at a press conference. “We can make people happy, but FC Utrecht is a tough opponent. They made it difficult for us here in Amsterdam. We may have played our best first half of the season, but had to settle for a draw.”
Youri Baas will not be there on Sunday. The defender has not recovered sufficiently from an injury he sustained in a match against PSV at the end of last month.
For injured goalkeeper Remko Pasveer and midfielder Branco van den Boomen the match against FC Utrecht also comes too soon. It is still unclear whether Owen Wijndal will be available. The left-back sustained an injury during a training last week.
Ajax are defending a nine-point lead over second-placed PSV, with five rounds remaining in the Eredivisie.
