Ajax have now accepted a fee of £36.5million rising to £40.5m for Jurrien Timber after verbally agreeing terms with Premier League side Arsenal, Mail Sport reports.

The 22-year-old Dutch defender has been the subject of interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich as well as other Premier League clubs, but the Gunners’ bid proved too strong.

The north London club have been busy in the transfer market, securing the signatures of Kai Havertz and Declan Rice in recent days, as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his squad ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Timber, 22, is a versatile defender, capable of playing at centre back or right back, and could be set to replace Rob Holding, who has been linked with moves away from the Emirates.

Holding’s teammate and left-back Kieran Tierney is also linked with a move away from the Premier League club who could potentially make a surprising return to former club Celtic.

The Netherlands international was previously linked with Manchester United, but rejected their advances last summer. He is now set to join Arsenal as they prepare for a return to Champions League football and a renewed challenge for the Premier League title.
