AC Milan vs Inter Milan, also known as the Milan Derby, is one of the biggest football rivalries on the planet. We can reveal their head-to-head record and some amazing stats around the fixture.
The two clubs are from Italy, and they currently play in Serie A. They have recently started battling for the title again after a long period of struggling to beat other sides like Juventus.
AC and Inter share the same stadium, the San Siro, and this has become one of the most iconic stadiums on the planet.
Like vs Barcelona, the Milan derby is one of the biggest on the planet and this rivalry is one of the reasons why football is loved by many.
The two sides have had many amazing players, including Ronaldinho, David Beckham, Kaka, Clarence Seedorf and Roberto Carlos. The two have been fierce competitors for over a century and this has made every fixture between the two more and more exciting as history is created year after year.
The crazy thing about these two clubs is that there could have easily been a world where Inter Milan was never founded.
AC Milan was founded in 1899; however, a dispute within the club and hierarchy saw many part with the Italian club. Those who left AC Milan formed a breakaway group in 1908 called Inter Milan. Those now at Inter wanted their club to be more accepting of foreign players.
This breakaway, combined with the fact that the two were consistently battling for trophies, has seen Inter and AC become fierce rivals.
As mentioned before, the fixture is known as the Milan Derby in English; however, in Italian, it is known as the Derby Della Madonnina or the Derby di Milano.
Over the last century, the two have played each other over 200 times (transfermarkt). They have battled in league matches, as well as domestic cup games and Champions League matches.
According to Transfermarkt, Inter Milan currently hold the bragging rights when it comes to the most wins in this derby. Inter have won 80 matches, whilst AC Milan has won 71.
There have been 67 draws. As you can see, it’s very tight between these two throughout history, and we could easily see AC overtake their rivals when it comes to more wins in the very near future.
The easier way to gauge which Milan club is more successful is to see who has won the most trophies out of the two.
The Inter Milan website reveals that the club has won 43 trophies, whilst the AC Milan website reveals that they have won 49 trophies. Therefore, AC Milan are the more successful side out of the two rivals. Again it is very close between the two sides.
Here are all the trophies that AC Milan have won (AC Milan).

An abundance of players have surprisingly featured for both Inter and AC Milan, despite the two being fierce rivals. Here is a list of footballers who have appeared for both sides.
The top goalscorer of this huge Milan derby goes to a Ukrainian who played for AC Milan. Striker Andriy Shevchenko has the most Derby di Milano goals with 14 in all competitions.
The biggest victory in the Derby di Milano was all the way back in 2001 in the Serie A. AC Milan managed to beat Inter Milan 6-0. It is arguably the most infamous win in this derby, and Inter fans will probably never stop hearing about it unless they manage to better it. Andriy Shevchenko and Gianno Comandini picked up two goals each, whilst Serginho and Federico Giunti scored the other two.
The reason behind the two Milan sides sharing the San Siro spans back to the early-mid 1900’s. AC Milan were the sole owners of the stadium until the 1930s when they sold it to the Italian Council. Despite this, they were still the only ones in the stadium until 1947. In this year, Inter Milan finally became tenants, just like AC Milan, and they have shared it ever since.
The San Siro is one of the biggest stadiums in Europe. It can hold up to 80,018 people, and when the two have to face each other, one is always seen as the away side so will get less attendance.
