Manchester City are aiming to secure themselves a closed agreement for the signing of Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan ‘in the next days’, according to a new report.
The Dutch international has rapidly emerged as Etihad Stadium officials’ number one target over the last few weeks, with a clear intention to strengthen their personnel in the middle of the park after a challenging season across competitions.
With Kevin De Bruyne already confirmed as a pending exit from the first-team squad following the expiry of his contract, decisions are also expected to be made over the likes of Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish – largely owing to their age and desire for new opportunities elsewhere.
As such, the feeling within the Etihad Stadium offices is that not only is a new central creative profile required to bolster the ranks, but also added energy and versatility slightly deeper within a traditional midfield trio.
And while the former position is likely to lead to the likes of Olympique Lyonnais’ Rayan Cherki or Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, the latter is almost certainly landing upon Italian football’s best midfielder from the last campaign.
According to the information of journalist Santi Aouna, Serie A giants AC Milan have now received a ‘very good’ proposal from Manchester City for Netherlands international midfield star, Tijjani Reijnders.
It is claimed that talks between the two clubs have been ‘very positive’, while officials at City want to seal a deal for the player ‘in the next days’ having already received a ‘yes’ from the side of the player.
With regards to talks with the player directly, the report suggests that a deal on that side is ‘almost done’ with final details now being clarified.
Should Reijnders finalise a move into the Manchester City squad, it would likely lead to rotation within Pep Guardiola’s system between the deep-lying role alongside Rodri and the more advanced ‘No.8’ position alongside the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Mateo Kovacic, and Nico.
The latter was originally tipped as a direct stand-in for Ballon d’Or winner Rodri when he arrived at the club towards the end of the January transfer window, but manager Guardiola was insistent on his abilities being more suited to a transitional midfield operation.
Speaking during a recent interview towards the end of the most-recent Premier League season, Guardiola told broadcast media, “Nico is a fantastic guy, he can play holding midfielder, he can play more in front, made a fantastic goal [against Bournemouth].
“And of course it’s good news that Rodri is back – still he’s on the way, he needs months and months, but the first step, he did it.”
With Tijjani Reijnders seemingly on the way to Manchester for the 2025/26 season, it remains to be seen what the future will hold for Nico, and how Pep Guardiola will go about utilising both players sufficiently to satisfy their game-time desires.
