Abu Kamara’s breakthrough season on loan at Portsmouth last season was one that really caught the eye in the EFL, with the dazzling wide man producing plenty of moments of quality during their Championship-winning League One campaign.

Time after time, Pompey fans were treated to match-winning moments from the young Norwich City loanee, and the Fratton Park faithful won’t have been surprised by his latest offering while playing for the England Elite Squad this week.

Picking up the ball on the right side of the pitch, Kamara has three Irish players in between himself and the penalty area, but the tricky winger sees them off with nonchalant ease, before being brought down for a penalty.

Once again, the 20-year-old has proven himself to be too hot to handle for opposing defenders, and will leave Canaries fans rubbing their hands about the season ahead, while Pompey can only look on and reminisce over yesteryear.

Abu Kamara set for Norwich City breakthrough after successful Portsmouth FC loan

The scene of Kamara bearing down on the penalty area was a regular one on the south coast last season, with the wide man proving to be a step above the third tier as he made his first foray into the professional game.

18 goal contributions from his 46 league matches proved to be a major factor in John Mousinho’s juggernaut returning to the Championship, with his quick-feet and alert mind creating and converting plenty of chances across the campaign.

After beginning the season playing on either flank, Kamara soon made the right side of attack his own as the season went on, with a number of match-winning displays with his creativity in the final third.

Vital goals against promotion rivals Derby County and Bolton Wanderers earned valuable points in the race for promotion, as well as scoring the only goal of the game in victory over Fleetwood Town earlier in the year.

Indeed, that goal against the Cod Army started with a run of a similar fashion to the one seen this week; as he receives the ball on halfway with his back to goal, before taking one opponent out the game with his first touch, before seeing off another with some nifty footwork, before burying his chance from all of 20 yards.

It’s the sort of goal that summed up his time at Fratton Park: the skill, the grace, and the pinpoint finish. It’s no wonder that Mousinho was keen to get him back for the upcoming campaign, as he eluded to earlier this year.

He told the Portsmouth News: "He’s just gone from strength to strength. I remember answering questions about Abs’ form around October time, because a couple of fans were getting on his back a bit and a bit frustrated, perhaps with a lack of output. We knew internally Abs would be able to produce though.

"I think he’s produced scintillating football on the left, but done it even better on the right. He’s not really looked back since coming over to that flank.

"Who knows what will happen with Abu? I’m sure that will be another conversation we have with Andrew and Norwich come the summer, then we’ll see how it goes from there."

Abu Kamara will add plenty of quality to Norwich City side next season

Having only seen Kamara play three times for City, Canaries fans will be looking forward to seeing the talented forward get the chance to break into the first-team in the upcoming campaign, with his recent exploits whetting the appetite for what lies ahead this season.

Having made mincemeat of League One, Kamara looks ready to make an instant impact at Carrow Road if given the opportunity in the coming 12 months, with new boss Johannes Hoff Thorup [pictured] likely to give him the chance to impress over the summer.

The Dane made the move to Carrow Road from FC Nordsjaelland two weeks ago, and has a reputation for blooding youngsters into the starting lineup in his recent roles, and Kamara will be one of the first academy prospects in line to be given a chance under the new man.

City have already seen the likes of Jonathan Rowe make a seamless move up to the first-team, and there is no reason why Kamara can’t follow suit, given his capability for exploiting weaknesses in opposition defences.

Kamara’s journey to regular game time could be made easier by the rumours that Gabriel Sara could be on his way out of Norfolk this summer, with the Brazilian said to be attracting interest from Premier League side Crystal Palace.

If the playmaker does move on, the young academy prospect should be trusted to help lead his side back to the top flight this season, because - as we have seen this week once again - he has more than enough ability to make a difference at Championship level.
