With the long-mooted transfer of Milos Kerkez finally completed, Liverpool’s summer spending has now reached record levels.

After two quiet windows, Arne Slot has set about redeveloping the squad in his image, having already landed the Premier League title with a side inherited from Jürgen Klopp.

Despite the already sizeable outlay, rumours abound that the Reds could head into the market once more, with many fans desperate for a new attacker to add further firepower to the ranks.

Misfiring striker Darwin Núñez has been linked with a move to Serie A champions Napoli. If the transfer were to go through, funds could then be available for a high-profile replacement, with Newcastle United star Alexander Isak believed to be top of the list of potential targets.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight show, we asked the Liverpool Echo’s LFC correspondent, Paul Gorst, for his thoughts on the Núñez and Isak rumours.

‘HE’S ALWAYS READY TO LEARN’ – FORMER TEAMMATE SPEAKS ABOUT LIVERPOOL TARGET MILOS KERKEZ

Paul said:

[On Núñez]

“I think the writing’s been on the wall for a while now, hasn’t it? One Premier League start in 2025, which was theoretically the easiest game of the season – Southampton at home.

“I think the only mysteries now are when Napoli makes their move and how much it’s going to be?

“It looks like Napoli are looking to maybe sell Victor Osimhen first, and then they’ll have a better idea of what they’re able to play around with in terms of fees.

“I just think it’s probably best for Liverpool just to wash their hands of Núñez, for lack of a better phrase, just to move him on and give him a fresh start, and they can look to reinvest the money elsewhere.

[On Isak]

“I’ve absolutely no doubt that they like Alexander Isak. They are interested in him. There is talk that Newcastle are looking to tie him down to a new contract.

“He earns around £130,000 a week, and they’re looking to make him in line with the top earners of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon at £150,000.

“He deserves to be in that same bracket at Newcastle, but that’s not a fee or a wage that would make Liverpool turn away.

“That’s very much achievable. Liverpool would be able to increase that if they did make the move.

“I think Liverpool are very much relaxed now, seeing what develops, seeing how the market develops, dominoes might fall in place here or there, and if there is any encouragement that they can do with Newcastle, I’m sure that they will look to see what can be done.”

REDMEN REACTS

With the club’s transfer record already broken with the signing of Florian Wirtz and links to Marc Guéhi growing by the day, it seems fanciful that Liverpool would be able to land one of Europe’s hottest properties in Alexander Isak in the same transfer window. A sale of Núñez would go some way to refilling the club coffers, and there are question marks over the future of players such as Harvey Elliott, Ben Doak and Federico Chiesa, who could also be offloaded. Despite Newcastle’s vast potential wealth given their Saudi backers, if Isak wishes to prove himself to be amongst the world’s best, a future away from St. James’s Park could be on the agenda in the next year or so. If he were to agitate for a move, Richard Hughes et al. would be foolish not to try and muscle their way to the front of the queue in much the same way they did with Wirtz.
