FC Barcelona are getting increasingly near to completing their first signing for the 2025-25 season as they are in the final stages of the signing of the Spanish goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

The Catalans are looking to sign him by paying his €25 million release clause, which will allow them to get him without entering into negotiations with the current owners of the player and their fierce rivals, RCD Espanyol.

Joan Garcia changes his contract with Barcelona

Thus, the next step in his signing would be Barcelona formalizing the payment of his release clause at the La Liga headquarters, which will complete his move to the Blaugrana club.

However, Mundo Deportivo claims that there has been a significant change in the pre-agreement that the Catalan club reached with the player a few days ago, when the two parties had agreed on a five-year contract. Now, the Spanish publication claims that he will sign a contract for six years, till 2031.

This new agreement was reached last week, and this extension of his contract length is in favor of Barcelona. However, the player himself also saw his wages improve, so everyone is satisfied with this new arrangement.

Barcelona to gain FFP margin with this change

The release clause paid for him will still need to be amortized in the first five years of his signing, according to La Liga’s regulations. However, FFP margin will be gained from him getting a little less in the first years of his contract, and his wages will increase in the sixth year, when his cost would already have been amortized.

Barcelona had already used this formula while renewing Lamine Yamal’s contract. Now, the Blaugranes will be looking to complete the rest of the process to finalize the arrival of Joan Garcia in Hansi Flick’s squad.
