A Manchester City move for an England international appears to have fallen by the wayside

One player who seemed to be a certain Manchester City transfer target entering the summer transfer window was England international Morgan Gibbs-White. David Ornstein had reported for The Athletic that the Nottingham Forest midfielder was a player that City had their eye on. Now it seems that a Manchester City move for Gibbs-White has fallen by the wayside. That’s not a surprise considering that City have signed Rayan Cherki from Lyon, and there doesn’t appear to be a pressing need for City to pursue a move for another midfielder.

Manchester City have reportedly cooled their interest in signing Morgan Gibbs-White.

Tom Collomosse has reported during a Q&A segment for the Daily Mail that Manchester City have cooked their interest in signing Morgan Gibbs-White. Furthermore, Collomosse reports that Manchester City’s signing of Rayan Cherki is part of the reason that City seem to have moved on from signing the England international. Furthermore, Collomosse adds that Manchester City have also baulked at Nottingham Forest’s £70 million asking price to sell one of their most important players.

There are more pressing areas of Pep Guardiola’s squad that need to be addressed this summer.

With the summer signings of Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki confirmed, as of right now, Manchester City do have a stacked midfield. With Reijnders, Cherki, Rodri, Nico, Bernardo Silva, Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden all capable of playing in midfield, Pep Guardiola’s squad does not need any more midfielders, for now. That situation could change if Bernardo Silva or Ilkay Gundogan leave the club this summer. Both players have been linked with a potential move to Galatasaray. If either player leaves, City may move for another midfielder. But even then, they may not move for a player like Morgan Gibbs-White.

There do appear to be more pressing areas to be addressed in the transfer market for City. Signing a right-back seems to be the most pressing issue. That is one position that City must fill this summer. It is a need that takes precedence over adding another midfielder to Pep Guardiola’s squad. It would also seem that is where Manchester City’s focus in the transfer market currently lies.

As of right now, there appears to be little to no chance that Manchester City will move for Morgan Gibbs-White. It now seems that City have moved on from potentially signing the England international. Gibbs-White could have been a player that would have bolstered Pep Guardiola’s squad, but instead City signed Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki. Both players arrived at the club for a combined cost of just over Nottingham Forest’s £70 million asking price for Gibbs-White. That does represent smart business by the City hierarchy.
