Manchester City are now unbeaten in their past seven matches. Their past two wins over Everton and Aston Villa are crucial in City’s chase to secure Champions League football for next season. But City’s performances in those two matches have shown that the base is there tactically for Pep Guardiola’s side to quickly return to the top of the Premier League. A few shrewd summer signings should make that a reality.
Stability and control are once again a strong element of City’s recent play. All that’s needed is younger legs to complement City’s current style. You can actually see how Manchester City may play next season based on the system Guardiola has employed over the past two months.
Looking at how City have played in recent weeks Pep Guardiola has used what he has to make his team resemble what they always have been. We have seen the so-called ‘Uncs’ return to City’s midfield. Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, Mateo Kovacic and Kevin De Bruyne form a strong base in City’s midfield. While their performances have improved, they can’t get around the pitch like they once could. So if City get their summer transfers right we could see a quick rise from Pep Guardiola’s side.
If Manchester City adds, for argument’s sake, Florian Wirtz, Morgan Gibbs-White and Andrea Cambiaso to the solid tactical base Guardiola has installed, we should instantly see an uptake in City’s result. That trio would add more athleticism and younger legs to the system Pep Guardiola has employed. Those three wouldn’t be the only players City will likely sign this summer but you can see how Manchester City could look after the summer transfer window is complete. Rodri’s return from injury is another factor to consider in this instance also.
Amongst a difficult season for Manchester City we have seen signs of life over the past seven matches. There is also a hint at the system Pep Guardiola may employ next season that has been on display in recent games. Control and stability are key elements of Manchester City’s play under Guardiola. They always have been. They’ve returned recently and they’ll form the foundation of Guardiola’s system going forward. But with a few quality signings in the summer Manchester City will likely go up a gear next season. That’s why the summer transfer window is so important cause if City get it right they should rise quickly next season.
