Trent Alexander-Arnold is leaving Liverpool and that means a new right-back will likely be arriving at Anfield this summer.
Conor Bradley may step up to fill Trent’s boots in the starting XI, but the vice-captain’s departure leaves the Reds’ short of depth at right-back so reinforcements are needed.
A number of names have been speculated about, including Jeremie Frimpong, Martim Fernandes and Givairo Read, although it isn’t yet clear who Richard Hughes’ top target for the position is.
Often small hints from journalists, club officials and even players can give insight into what is going on behind the scenes, and Cody Gakpo may have just revealed the identity of Liverpool’s next right-back.
The Liverpool squad have been afforded time off this week, they are Premier League champions already so a drop in training intensity is expected.
Gakpo took the opportunity to travel, and posted a picture of himself with an international teammate, Denzel Dumfries.
Dumfries, fresh off the back of a Champions League semi-final in which he scored twice and provided three assists across two legs, posed for a picture in what appears to be a clothes shop with the Liverpool man.
Following on from his inspired performance in the Champions League, could Gakpo have been hinting that Dumfries is the man that will be brought in to replace the departing Alexander-Arnold?
Although Dumfries, 29, is a bit older than the usual profile of player the Reds target, he has proven himself to be a truly elite player for Inter Milan this season.
The Dutchman has played a more advance role than Liverpool’s fullbacks typically do this season, but this summer is the perfect opportunity for Slot to alter his tactics, and his countryman could prove to be a smart addition.
Valued at €30.5 million by Football Transfers, Dumfries is an option that wouldn’t break the bank in a summer in which the Reds are looking to strengthen in a number of positions.
With international teammates Gakpo, Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch already at Anfield and a Dutch head coach at the helm, Liverpool would be the perfect club for Dumfries to continue his career at.
