Gianluca di Marzio’s latest reporting on the future of Victor Osimhen has some positives in it for Chelsea.

He claims that the 25 year old is set to leave Napoli this summer, and that Chelsea are prepared to offer a fee of “around €80-90m.”

That could involve sending a young player and Romelu Lukaku in part-exchange, something we hadn’t seen suggested before. Certainly selling Lukaku somewhere would be a vital part of generating the funds for any such deal, whether that’s directly in return to Napoli or not.

The young player in question is another unknown – but it could be a clever way of smuggling one of our less successful signings of the last two years off the books.

A high price – but a possible one, even for broke Chelsea

A bad season for Osimhen and Napoli has seen the figures of €120m or even more than that gradually declining, and now this piece puts our interest at a max of €80-90m. We can just about see us being able to put that much money together, the question is whether Napoli accept it.

They will want to move him on now while he value is high, so it then starts to be about what other clubs are offering. PSG are favourites at the moment, but they have issues of their own. They signed two strikers last summer, and will need to move at least one of them on before doing anything else.

To us, it still seems very likely that someone out there comes in with a larger offer than €90m and leaves us out of the race. Strikers with Osinhen’s skillset just don’t come around often enough for someone to not take a punt on him. But we’re certainly not out of the race, and we will be paying close attention, especially if interest is slow in the early weeks of the window.
