Borussia Dortmund just announced a partnership with one of the NFL's elite teams: the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Black-and-Yellows from the Signal Iduna Park join forces with the also Black-and-Yellows from Pittsburgh, which are two clubs bound by their love for the city's traditions and sports culture.

The partnership will be a first-timer of this type for both clubs, whose roots are bonded by the industrial city pole and sporting honors, making it seem to make them a match made in heaven. The idea of the clubs is to collaborate in many areas to promote their image with joined team activities, content creation, and engaging fan events.

As an appetizer for this new partnership, former Steelers legend Miles Killebrew had the chance to visit the Signal Iduna Park installations at a home match. Also, BVB legend Patrick Owomoyela and Steelers Super Bowl champion Santonio Holmes remarkably exchanged jerseys as the BVB delegation visited the Acrisure Stadium in December 2024.

"I was blown away by my experience at Dortmund. From the minute we arrived at Signal Iduna Park, it was clear to me how special an organization BVB is. From the YellowWall, to the atmosphere and the fans, it was a memorable day for me, and I look forward to returning someday. It will be exciting to see the relationship between the Steelers and BVB grow in the future."Miles Killebrew

This collaboration, however, was already briefed beforehand, with the Steelers acquiring a license from the league to be part of the NFL's Global Markets Program in Germany, as well as BVB expanding a US-based office in New York. Besides that, Dortmund hosted a summit in Germany with a Steelers staff member, while a similar event has been planned in Pittsburgh for later this spring.

This month, the Steelers will be hosting their first-ever German-based flag football clinic at the BVB Football Academy in the presence of a Steelers player. Steelers Director of Business Development and Strategy, Dan Rooney commented on the partnership and what it represents for both communities:

"The partnership with Borussia Dortmund, the first of its kind for the Steelers organization, builds off the deep connections both of our teams have with the communities we represent, as well as our shared values, rooted in our industrial pasts of hard work, determination, and a winning spirit."Dan Rooney

Speaking of the cities' similarities, Marc Lingenhoff, Managing Director for BVB Americas, Inc., said both clubs share the "more than colors" and highlighted how important it is to bring sports culture together using the teams' brands:

"When exploring various expansion opportunities for BVB in the United States, we sawthe Steelers as the ideal partner with tremendous success on the field, as well as a legacy of excellence off the field. Known for their resilience and community-first approach, the Steelers are a cornerstone of Pittsburgh’s identity - and the same can be said for BVB in our Dortmund community as well. We are proud and excited to bring this synergistic partnership to life on the global stage, with the fan at the center of everything we do."Marc Lingenhoff

This connection also inspired more than simply sporting glories. In 2022, the cities entered together on the ‘Transatlantic Innovation and Climate Partnership Agreement,’ which personifies a partnership that has the potential of finding common ground within sports and prospects for a brighter future in many areas for the respective brotherly cities.
