Chelsea are being heavily linked with a few defenders at the moment, with Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace and Dean Huijsen of Bournemouth seemingly top of the list.
But there are already a lot of defenders on the books at the moment, after a few summers of heavy spending in that area. There is no doubt some of them will leave this summer, the question is who?
Top of the list are surely those players who left on loan in January. The same logic which made them want to leave back then will still apply in the summer.
Axel Disasi is clearly not rated by Enzo Maresca, and will likely move permanently to Aston Villa if they want him and can agree a price.
Renato Veiga is a slightly different case – Maresca did seem to like him, and he was a useful squad player in that he could play left back and invert inside. He also brought some size and physicality to the group. But he was the one who pushed to leave on loan in January in search of minutes, and given he’s only going to have more competition in the future by the sounds of things, we would imagine it makes sense for him to be sold too.
Renato Veiga smiles in his Juventus unveiling.
The Athletic have today written that, having spent €14m on the Portugal international to buy him from Basel a year ago, we could be set for a quick profit after a moderately successful spell with us and on loan with Juventus since January.
We had previously heard about a €20m asking price, which makes no sense to us – there’s no point going through all this hassle for a €6m profit. The Athletic talk about a “sizeable” profit, and to us that would mean €25m or more.
