$20m player will come to London on Monday – but won’t play for Chelsea until January

Fabrizio Romano has this morning given the “here we go” treatment to one of Chelsea’s latest youth talent acquisitions.

The insider has claimed that the deal to sign Aaron Anselmino is done. Chelsea “will pay package in excess of $20m” for the Boca Juniors centre back. He will fly to England on Monday for his medical, but the medium term plan is to send him back to Boca on loan, “at least until January,” according to Romano.

Chelsea are pretty deep at centre back among the senior group, and it’s hard to see a space opening up for Anselmino even by then. But if Trevoh Chalobah is sold and Anselmino really impresses, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he gets a chance in the second half of next season.

Depending on the situation with foreign loan slots come January, it’s also feasible he makes the move to Europe, but gets some experience on the continent somewhere. A move to Spain or Portugal is a standard stepping stone from South American football to Europe, but may not be necessary.

Chelsea in no rush to deploy latest acquisition

This is a deal which has been dragging on for some time, and we’re surprised it’s still not been confirmed and announced yet. It seemed an easy deal to do, and the terms seem roughly the same as when it was first mentioned a month or so ago.

Still, Anselmino will be staying on loan in Argentina until January at least, so there’s no rush to get him signed up and working with Enzo Maresca in preseason. He will be added to the list with Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez of young talents we’ve got playing in South America for us to keep an eye on for the next few months.
