2024 Women’s AFCON: Morocco knock out Ghana and set up final clash with Nigeria!
Morocco are heading to a second consecutive final at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The Atlas Lionesses clinched their spot in the 2024 Women’s AFCON final after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Ghana (1-1, 4-2 on pens) in Rabat on July 22, 2025.
The second semifinal of this 15th edition of the Women’s AFCON pitted hosts Morocco against Ghana. Both sides delivered an intense showdown on the pitch at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, each battling for the last ticket to the final against Nigeria.
The first half went in favor of the Ghanaians. Highly active, they capitalized on a shaky Moroccan defense from a corner to open the scoring through Stella Nyamekye in the 26th minute. Morocco, rattled, tried to respond through Chebbak and Mssoudy, but their efforts were to no avail.
After the break, the Atlas Lionesses shifted gears. Spurred on by their home crowd, they drew level in the 55th minute through Sakina Ouzraoui Diki, perfectly positioned at the far post after a barrage of Moroccan attacks. The remainder of the match was marked by a fierce midfield battle and several injury stoppages, but neither side could regain the lead.
In extra time, both teams continued to cancel each other out despite a handful of clear chances on both ends. The match would ultimately be decided by penalties. In the shootout, the Moroccans showed greater composure. Hanane Aït El Haj, Ibtissam Jraïdi, Kenza Chapelle, and Anissa Lahmari all converted their spot kicks, while goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi was the hero, saving penalties from Ghana’s Evelyn Badu and Comfort Yeboah.
Thanks to this victory, Morocco will play their second straight Women’s AFCON final, following their 2022 appearance. The Lionesses will face Nigeria in a highly anticipated rematch between two of the continent’s top contenders.
