Chelsea are likely to shuffle around a few players this January, but Enzo Maresca has largely got his squad in good shape.

Celestine Babayaro was interviewed by the Metro this week, and he pointed to one player in particular who needed to leave sooner rather than later:

“In terms of players who might need to look at moving on, I’m looking at Ben Chilwell. I love him – he’s actually one of my favourite left-backs. But he can’t seem to get himself fit. He’s the sort of person who I’m looking at, who probably needs to think about his career,” Babayaro said.

“You know, he’s not as young as he once was, so he’s got to be thinking, ‘if I’m not getting games here, I need to move.’ Apart from that, I don’t think anyone else will be thinking of leaving the club at this moment in time, because they’re pretty much all brand new signings.

“But, yeah, I just think Chilwell might be looking at his future, and thinking he needs to move on from the club.”

Chilwell’s wages still killing any chance of carrying on with his career

As was the case in the summer, the real question is over who wants to buy Chilwell. It’s clear Chelsea don’t want him and he’s likely happy to go – but his £200,000 a week wages are proving impossible for any other team to match.

He’s trapped in something of a golden cage right now, having to balance the appeal of getting back to playing with the appeal of earning vast sums of money. Surely the almost total freeze out he’s experienced since August will have pushed him towards taking a wage cut?

The latest information was no – but we will have to see.
