Burnley will be expected to be one of the busiest Championship teams when it comes to transfers this summer.

The Clarets will be playing second-tier football once again in the 2024/25 season, and with that, it is likely to mean there could be a few exits on the cards.

It has been reported by The Athletic that the Lancashire side expects as many as five players to leave the club over the coming months.

One of those players who looks set to leave is goalkeeper James Trafford, who has been linked with Newcastle United, Liverpool, and Chelsea.

It has been claimed that Burnley are looking for around £15-£18 million for the shotstopper, and the latest report states that the Magpies could be about to accelerate their interest.

Trafford looks very likely to leave Turf Moor this summer, but he may not be the only significant departure, as here at Football League World we have picked two more players likely to leave Burnley…

Scott Twine

In the 2022 summer transfer window, Burnley decided to take a risk and secure the services of attacking midfielder Scott Twine.

The 24-year-old had been a key player for MK Dons, as he played such an important role in the club reaching the League One play-offs that season.

It was seen as an exciting signing for the Clarets, but now two years on, the decision to bring him to the club hasn’t gone as planned.

Twine has struggled during his time with Burnley, as the attacker has played just 18 games for the club in two seasons.

In the 2023/24 season, he spent it on loan at Hull City and Bristol City, loans that saw him play football, but again, it didn’t do much to say he has a chance at Burnley.

Anyway, it has now been reported by The Sun that Burnley is willing to sell Twine this summer, and he has sides who are interested.

Birmingham City, Bristol City, and Sunderland have all been credited with an interest, and with the Clarets reportedly willing to sell the 24-year-old, it seems likely that he will leave Turf Moor this summer.

It may just be a question of whether Twine leaves on a permanent basis or if it is another loan switch for the player. Either way, it appears that the move to Lancashire hasn’t worked out for Twine, and for the sake of his career, he needs to find a new club in this transfer window.

Wout Weghorst

Some Burnley fans may have forgotten that they still have Wot Weghorst on their books.

The Clarets signed the Dutch striker in the 2022 January transfer window, but apart from playing 20 times for the club in the final six months of the 2021/22 season, Weghorst hasn’t played for the club since.

He spent the first half of the next season on loan at Besiktas before he joined Manchester United on loan, where he was part of the team that won the EFL Cup.

Then, in the 2023/24 season, Weghorst was again sent out on loan; this time he joined Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, where he scored seven goals in 28 league games.

The 31-year-old is still contracted to Burnley until next summer, so realistically, this is the club’s final chance to get a fee for the player before he leaves for nothing in 12 months.

Weghorst is likely to leave Burnley once again this summer, but at this stage, it remains unclear if that will be through another loan or a permanent switch.

One thing we do know is that Dutch side Ajax are interested in signing the striker, with it being reported that they have enquired about the player regarding his availability.

For whatever reason, Weghorst’s move to Burnley hasn’t worked out, and even with a new manager coming through the doors, it seems unlikely he will continue at the club; therefore, a move this summer looks certain once again.
