Manchester United have agreed to cancel Zlatan Ibrahimović’s contract so the striker can complete a move to LA Galaxy.

Widespread reports say that the 36-year-old has signed a 2-year-contract with the five-time MLS cup winners and will not earn enough to be named as a designated player.

A brief statement issued on United’s official website read: “Manchester United confirms that it has agreed to the termination of Zlatan Ibrahimović’s contract with immediate effect.

“Everyone at the club would like to thank Zlatan for his contribution to the team since his arrival and wishes him well for the future.”

One of the most successful players in modern football, Ibrahimović has won 11 league titles in Europe during his time with Ajax, Juventus, Inter, Barcelona, Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain. After leaving the French capital in 2016, Ibrahimović joined Manchester United and scored 29 goals in his debut season with the club.

However, a serious knee ligament injury sidelined him in 2017 and – despite extending his stay at Old Trafford by another year – he has struggled to get into the team since returning to fitness.

After the Swede made just started one Premier League game during the 2017/18 season, Manchester United agreed to terminate his contract, allowing him to move to MLS immediately.

If Ibrahimović joins LA Galaxy, as is widely expected, he will follow in the footsteps of United favourite David Beckham, Republic of Ireland’s record goalscorer Robbie Keane and England cap centurions Steven Gerrard and Ashley Cole by taking in a late career chapter in Los Angeles.

Cole was sent off in a 2-1 defeat at New York City last time out, a result that came on the back of a season-opening win over Portland Timbers.

Sigi Schmid’s side travel to face Vancouver Whitecaps this weekend before hosting LAFC in the inaugural Los Angeles derby at the end of the month.
