AC Milan have decided to part ways with their talisman striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer, reports Foot Mercato.

The Swedish striker’s injury-troubled season hasn’t warranted him a contract extension, with his current deal expiring in the summer.

The 41-year-old spent nearly nine months on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery last year before returning to action earlier this February.

However, he soon suffered a thigh injury during March international break, forcing him to be out of action until now, and no return date has been set either.

Despite his hunger to play at the highest level for a few more years, Ibrahimovic’s physical decline with age suggests otherwise.

The Swede’s second spell with Rossoneri has been nothing but remarkable, having amassed 37 goals and 11 assists since 2020.

While many doubted he was past his prime, Ibrahimovic showed that age is just a number by playing a key role in Milan’s resurgence under Stefano Pioli, winning the Serie A title last season as well as securing Champions League qualification in back-to-back seasons.

Nonetheless, he no longer looks a reliable option because of his evident decline, and Milan will have to find an apt and young successor to move forward with their plans.

Rossoneri have prioritised a new striker for the summer transfer window, having been disappointed with Divock Origi’s lack of form and more reliance on Olivier Giroud.

Noah Okafor of RB Salzburg, Atalanta sensation Rasmus Hojlund and Reims’ Florian Balogun (on loan from Arsenal) are the top names on Milan’s wishlist.

Rossoneri are also considering bringing back Lorenzo Colombo, who is currently on loan at Lecce.
