AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be sidelined for the next eight months after successfully undergoing surgery on his knee.

The Swedish superstar scored eight goals in 23 Serie A games this season as the Rossoneri secured their first Scudetto in 11 years.

Ibrahimovic has continued to defy his years and has still proven to be a valuable asset even at the age of 40, but the future of his lengthy career has suffered a major setback after surgery on a knee injury.

"AC Milan announces that Zlatan Ibrahimovic underwent an operation on his left knee carried out by Dr Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, with the Club's Medical Director Stefano Mazzoni in attendance, at the Hopital Jean Mermoz in Lyon," a club statement read.

"The arthroscopy had been planned for a while to definitively resolve the joint's instability through the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament, with lateral reinforcement and meniscus reparation.

"The operation was a complete success and the prognosis is estimated between seven and eight months."

Ibrahimovic has combatted major knee injuries before, notably sustaining ligament damage at the back end of the 2016/17 season while at Manchester United.

He has endured a few knee issues since his return to Milan in 2020, with many of these problems being picked up down the final stretch of this season and forcing the striker to go under the knife.
