Zinedine Zidane has sensationally revealed he will leave Real Madrid after two-and-a-half seasons as coach.
The French tactician just won his third consecutive Champions League title last weekend, beating Liverpool 3-1 in Kyiv.
There were no suggestions that the 45-year-old would quit so dramatically, although when speaking to reporters in February, Zizou did say: “Being a coach is extremely tiring – more so at a club like Real Madrid. When I feel there is nothing more to give, I’ll walk away.”
He seems have done exactly that, having reportedly spoken to president Florentino Perez on Thursday morning to confirm his decision.
At a hastily organised press conference, Zidane then admitted to the world that he would leave his post immediately, going out on the ultimate high.
“This is the right moment for everyone, it might seem a bit strange, but it had to be done for the good of everyone, the players, the club, and myself,” he told reporters.
“This team must keep winning, and it needs a change after three years, another voice, another method of working.
“I made this decision because I love this club, I love (Florentino Perez) and I am grateful towards him.”
President Perez meanwhile, was effusive in his praise for Zidane, revealing that he wanted the Frenchman to stay “forever”.
“After winning the Champions League, the decision was unexpected. It is a sad day for me, the fans and the players. But he knows I wanted him as a player and as a manager.
“I wanted him to stay forever and I wanted to convince him to stay. But I know it was his final decision. All I want to do is remind him that this club is his home and family.”
