Real Madrid are interested in a deal to sign Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante.

Zinedine Zidane is believed to be a major fan of the France international, who has starred at Stamford Bridge since his £32m arrival from Leicester in 2016.

The 28-year-old has established himself as arguably the world’s finest defensive midfield player during his time in the Premier League, with Zidane keen to sign Kante as he seeks to find the perfect midfield balance at the Spanish giants.

Real endured a disappointing campaign last season and despite a summer outlay of over £300m, they have begun the new campaign in similarly indifferent fashion. Zidane’s side have won just one of their opening three La Liga fixtures, and midfield has been identified as a key position to strengthen.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and Ajax’s Donny van de Beek were both strongly linked with a move to the Bernabeu this summer, though Zidane is now said to be keen on signing his fellow countryman Kante as he seeks to add energy and dynamism to his midfield options.

Toni Kroos and Luka Modric have both struggled to find their best form, and according to The Athletic, Real could now be set for a third raid on Chelsea.

Having already secured the signings of Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard from Stamford Bridge in 2018 and 2019 respectively, Chelsea could now find themselves facing a battle to keep another one of their stars out of the Spanish sides clutches.

Chelsea’s position is however strengthened by the fact that Kante only signed a new long-term contract extension in November, with the club under no pressure to sell their prized asset.

The World Cup winner has made 145 appearances and scored eight goals since joining the club three seasons ago, winning the PFA Player’s Player and Football Writer’s Player of the Year as Chelsea won the title in 2017.
