L’Équipe report tonight that Paris Saint-Germain striker Hugo Ekitike had been the subject of a bid worth €40m from Zenit Saint Petersburg, but the Russian club have ultimately been unsuccessful in their eleventh-hour attempts to sign the young French forward.

The former Reims man has been at the centre of attention this deadline day, with both West Ham and Crystal Palace having pushed to sign him on loan, while the 21-year-old also turned down the chance to replace PSG-bound Randal Kolo Muani at Eintracht Frankfurt.

The prospect of a move to the reigning Russian champions did not go any further than initial talks. Ekitike is now set to stay at PSG for the upcoming campaign, as he looks to atone for a middling first campaign in the French capital, in which he scored four goals in all competitions. He will be competing with new signings Gonçalo Ramos and Kolo Muani for playing time up front.
