Former Swedish international Emil Bergström became the latest acquisition of Górnik Zabrze on Monday. The defender signed a contract with the Trójkolorowi until the end of the 2022/23 season.
29-year-old Bergström joins Górnik on a free transfer, having been without a club since his four-year stint at Dutch side Utrecht came to an end in June.
The Stockholm-born centre-back started his professional career with his hometown club Djurgardens. After four years he moved to Rubin Kazan, and then to Utrecht via a loan spell at Swiss club Grasshoppers Zurich. Further loan stints at FC Basel and Willem II have since followed.
Bergström made his unofficial Sweden debut back in 2015, playing the second half of a 1-0 defeat to Finland, which was not sanctioned by FIFA. He has since appeared in the national team colours on two more occasions, and worn the captain’s armband on both outings.
The 188-centimetre-tall defender will wear his usual number 13 jersey at Ulica Roosevelta, and will be in line to make his Górnik debut when they resume their Ekstraklasa campaign at home to Zagłębie Lubin on Saturday.
