Vissel Kobe secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Tokyo Verdy in their J1 League encounter at Ajinomoto Stadium on Saturday, with Koya Yuruki's second-half strike proving the difference between the sides.
In a tightly contested affair watched by 17,474 spectators, Kobe demonstrated clinical efficiency to claim three valuable points that could prove crucial in their battle to climb away from the relegation zone.
The opening period saw both teams adopt cautious approaches, with physical battles dominating the midfield. Vissel's Yuya Kuwasaki received an early booking in the 13th minute, setting the tone for a combative encounter.
Tokyo Verdy thought they had broken the deadlock just before half-time when they had the ball in the net, only for VAR to intervene and rule out the goal for a foul by Yuto Tsunashima.
The visitors struck the decisive blow six minutes after the restart. Erik, who has been in fine form with three goals in his previous four matches, turned provider with a well-weighted pass that Yuruki converted with composure to give Vissel Kobe the advantage.
Tokyo Verdy's task became significantly harder when Tsunashima received his second yellow card in the 86th minute, reducing the hosts to ten men for the closing stages and effectively ending their hopes of salvaging a point.
Despite enjoying less possession (42% compared to Kobe's 58%), Tokyo Verdy created several decent opportunities, registering four shots on target from their ten attempts. However, their finishing let them down at crucial moments.
Vissel Kobe manager Takayuki Yoshida's tactical approach paid dividends as his side maintained better ball control with a 77% pass completion rate and made the most of their limited opportunities in front of goal.
Tetsushi Yamakawa was exceptional in Kobe's defence, earning an 8.5 rating after winning 12 of 16 duels and completing 48 passes with impressive accuracy. Goalscorer Yuruki was also influential, contributing two shots and three key passes alongside his match-winning strike.
For the hosts, Naoki Hayashi stood out with a 7.3 rating, making four tackles and two blocks while winning six of seven duels. Captain Hiroto Taniguchi also performed admirably, winning 11 of 15 duels and making three tackles.
"We were outmatched in intensity and quick reactions," admitted Tokyo Verdy boss Hiroshi Jofuku after the match. "We need to improve not only our physical strength but also our tactical adjustments, particularly in regaining possession quickly after losing the ball."
Vissel Kobe's Takayuki Yoshida praised his team's discipline and execution, highlighting the defensive solidity that earned them a clean sheet thanks in part to crucial saves from goalkeeper Daiya Maekawa.
The result leaves Tokyo Verdy languishing in 13th place with just two wins from their last ten matches, while Vissel Kobe's victory provides a vital boost as they look to climb from their precarious 16th position in the table.
