It had been over 41 years since Aston Villa last played and scored in the Champions League/European Cup, but Youri Tielemans’ 27th minute goal gave them the lead against Young Boys in their first game back in the competition.

And it didn’t take them long to get their next!

Villa, who famously won the trophy in 1981/82, had last played in the competition the following season, bowing out to Juventus in the quarter-finals.

Their scorer in the 3-1 second leg loss, Peter Withe, was also the matchwinner in the final the year prior against Bayern Munich in Rotterdam.

Their long wait for a return to Europe’s top table ended when Unai Emery guided them to fourth place in the Premier League last time around, and now Tielemans has got their first goal, giving them a precious lead in Switzerland.

And it was a goal straight off the training ground, as a corner routine led to John McGinn finding the Belgian midfielder inside the box, who finished brilliantly through a sea of players.

What a moment for everyone connected to the club, even more so in light of the death of club legend Gary Shaw on Monday night.

They didn’t have to wait long for their next either, 11 minutes to be precise, as Jacob Ramsey tapped home after some calamitous Young Boys defending.

Amadou Onana sealed the club’s first win in the competition since November 1982 in the second half, capping off a brilliant night for the Villains.
