In case you missed it, Real Madrid suffered humiliation in the Copa del Rey as they lost to third team side CD Alcoyano on Wednesday evening.
But it wasn’t even their most embarrassing cup exit ever.
We’ve asked our OneFootball team from around the continent for the biggest ever cup upsets in each of the top European leagues. And Real Madrid fans, you’re in some fine company.
Real Madrid experienced one of their most embarrassing nights on Wednesday. For the fourth time, they were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by a Second Division B team.
José Juan, Juanan or Jordan became, for a day the heroes of the small town of Alcoy, but for Real Madrid they merely reawakened the ghosts of Alcorcón, arguably the most humiliating defeat for Real Madrid in the club’s long and rich history.
In 2009/10, a team with players like Karim Benzema, Raúl, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Guti lost 4-0 to third tier Alcorcón. That humiliating defeat marked the beginning of the end for Manuel Pellegrini, who never recovered from that historic setback.
In those days, Madrid had the chance to stage a second leg comeback but the 4-0 demolition at the Santo Domingo was too much of an ask to overcome at the Bernabéu.

Hereford beating Newcastle is up there and we’ve had some spectacular final upsets with Sunderland, Wimbledon and Wigan all winning the Wembley showpiece against the odds.
But as far as upsets and cup exits go, Wrexham’s 1992 defeat of Arsenal is hard to look past. Bottom of the fourth tier at the time (and not yet owned by Ryan Reynolds!) Wrexham found themselves a goal down to reigning league champions Arsenal before two late goals knocked the Gunners out.
“I always have two pints of Guinness on a Friday, sometimes more,” said Mickey Thomas, once of Manchester United, who netted the equalising goal. “It gives me energy, I feel stronger and believe in it.”

In modern times, the Coppa Italia’s favourite victim appears to be Roma. Fans are upset by this week’s defeat to Spezia, but not as upset as they were two years ago.
It was January 30th and Fiorentina literally destroyed the Giallorossi, with an outstanding performance from Federico Chiesa: 7-1 for la Viola.
A disaster and a humiliation for Roma that led, one month later, to the dismissal of coach Eusebio Di Francesco.

On 14 August 1994, German regional league club TSV Vestenbergsgreuth managed the greatest sensation in the history of the DFB Pokal, knocking Bayern Munich out in the first round.
Giovanni Trappatoni had just taken Bayern over, Oliver Kahn had just arrived between the posts. It didn’t help.
Even with world champions like Lothar Matthäus and international stars like Jean-Pierre Papin, Bayern couldn’t avoid a 1-0 defeat to a team of part-timers.

Clermont (fourth tier) beating Paris Saint-Germain on penalties, having been 4-1 down in 1997. Garcia’s Marseille eliminated by Andrézieux (fourth tier) in 2019. Bielsa’s team, Ligue 1 leaders at the time, eliminated by amateur side Grenoble in 2015. Or Gerets’ Marseille defeated in 2008 by fifth tier Quarquefou. Coupe de France history is full of amazing underdog exploits.
But the most amazing of all is probably Calais’ fantastic run in 2000, when the amateur team reached the final (where they lost 2-1 to Nantes), after beating two Ligue 2 teams (Lille and Cannes) and two Ligue 1 teams (Strasbourg and Bordeaux) on the way. Without doubt the greatest stories of the Coupe de France’s magic.
