Javi Martínez and Thomas Müller have heaped praise on Bayern Munich team-mate Tom Starke following the veteran goalkeeper’s surprise appearance in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Starke came out of retirement at the beginning of the season following Manuel Neuer’s injury and was then drafted into the team at the last minute when Sven Ulreich was forced to pull out during the warm-up at the Commerzbank Arena.
And with him set to feature again when Bayern host Cologne on Wednesday evening, Martínez has lauded the 36-year-old for rolling back the years and keeping a clean sheet on what was his 100th Bundesliga appearance.
“I see Tom every day in training and I don’t know how old he is,” the Spaniard the official Bundesliga website in the wake of a win which moved Jupp Heynckes’ men eight points clear at the top of the table.
“He looks 50, but plays like he’s 28. He’s a role model for all young goalkeepers.”
“Tom shows superhuman skills in training,” added Müller.
“He still has the calf muscles to jump high and far enough. Only the hairs on his head are not quite long enough.”
But the former German U-21 international custodian wasn’t about to take his team-mates’ cheeky comments lying down.
“Obviously Javi didn’t look in the mirror this morning!” he quipped.
