Though he was born in Mexico, América winger ‘Chucho’ López has had dual-nationality and will be joining the Guatemalan National Team.

Guatemala manager Amarini Villatoro has made it his mission to strengthen his side with dual-nationals and López has been a huge focal point.

Guatemala have been working on this slow, tedious, and expensive process and president of the Guatemalan Federation, Gerardo Paiz, provided an update on López’s inclusion.

“The process continues. The lawyers are working hard. What’s happened is that there is a lot of paperwork to be done and, since the institutions are not working completely, it slows down,” he said.

The Americanista youth player was ‘discovered’ thanks to a relative who contacted the Federation and Villatoro himself.

After that, he was contacted for the first time following the CONCACAF Champions League second-leg clash between América and Guatemalan side Comunicaciones, in which ‘Chucho’ was named as a substitute.

López qualifies for Guatemala through his grandfather. His mother was required to obtain citizenship in order to transfer it to her son.
